Selektiivistä mutismia ei välttämättä huomata kuin vasta päiväkoti- tai kouluiässä. Lapsi saattaa puhua kotona, mutta tietyissä tilanteissa hän ei saa sanaa suustaan.
Selektiivinen mutismi on ahdistuneisuushäiriöihin luokiteltava puhumisen vaikeus.
Kouluttajana toimii selektiivisen mutismin pioneeri Maggie Johnson.
Koulutus pidetään englannin kielellä.

Shyness, selective mutism or something else?
Selective mutism (SM) is an anxiety disorder characterised by a consistent failure to speak in certain situations, despite being able to speak freely at other times. No longer considered to be a rare disorder, most schools and nurseries have at least one of these children on roll, with a steep rise in areas with a high migrant or bilingual population.
SM frequently goes unrecognised and is commonly mistaken for shyness, poorly developed language, deliberate refusal to speak or a feature of autism, leading to years of preventable anguish and frustration for the individuals affected, their families and their teachers.
The longer SM is ignored or mishandled, the harder the silence is to break, and the greater the risk of under-achievement and long-term psychological distress. Education for all is essential to establish a common understanding of the nature of the disorder and best approach to management.
What will the participants learn?
In this training you will learn how to make a diagnosis of SM and distinguish between SM, shyness, reluctance to speak and traumatic mutism. You will hear about the nature of SM: how it develops and what it means for the child. You will gain a comprehensive introduction to evidence-based management of SM and learn how to identify factors that prevent progress and address them.
This training gives you everyday management techniques to talk openly to children about their SM and engage them without putting pressure on them to speak. You will also learn how to guide perhaps anxious parents and manage peers who talk for the child, how to facilitate participation rather than avoidance. In addition, you will gain know-how for communication at home and school and the competence to maintain progress when the child is transitioning to a new class or school. You will attain how to implement a small-steps programme to establish and generalise speech across a range of settings as well as additional considerations when working with children who are exposed to more than one language or children who show signs of regression.

Internationally acclaimed expert in selective mutism
Maggie Johnson
Maggie is a speech and language therapist advisor and internationally acclaimed expert in selective mutism. With forty years’ experience in education and community settings, Maggie works closely with families and schools; co-facilitates a peer support group for adults who have selective mutism; and provides training and workshops for schools, parents and health professionals across the UK and abroad.
Maggie pioneered the behavioural approach for selective mutism in the 80s and early 90s. Contrary to general medical opinion at the time, her clinical experience had lead her to view the disorder as a manifestation of anxiety, rather than deliberate refusal to speak. This view is now widely upheld.
Maggie’s publications include ‘The Selective Mutism Resource Manual’ (Use code BSE20 at checkout for a 20% discount) which has been translated into several languages and continues to help challenge myths and misperceptions about selective mutism. In 2014 she was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists in recognition of her clinical expertise and special contribution to the profession.
