Jeff Chen

Vice President of Data Science, Viaplay Group

Jeff is a statistician and data scientist passionate about discovering ways that data can improve our lives. He has deep experience in leading data initiatives in over 35 domains, working with a wide range of stakeholders such as firefighters, climatologists, economists, and designers.

Currently, he is the VP of data science at Viaplay — a leading video streaming service in 11 countries (and counting). He is also an affiliated researcher at the Bennett Institute for Public Policy at the University of Cambridge where he researches new statistical learning applications.

Previously, he has worked in a wide range of fields from climate change at NASA and the White House (Obama Administration) to fire risk prediction at the NYC Fire Department (Bloomberg Administration) to ML for the US’ Gross Domestic Product at the US Bureau of Economic Analysis. He has served as a moneyballing advisor to professional sports teams for machine learning-based scouting. He also advises tech startups on data product strategy and capacity building. He loves building technical capacity from the ground up and have co-founded three data science teams, taught dozens of graduate students at Georgetown University, and co-authored a textbook on data science for public policy.
